Would you call it a stylus?  He uses it for writing braille.

I have a classmate this semester who is Russian and blind.  He makes his way around campus with the use of a cane, and uses this little stylus to take notes.  It’s pretty impressive to come from the other side of the planet on your own, being unable to see.

Feeling mopey.

October 13th, 2008

I’m going through another period of feeling depressed.  I think these are linked to my period lately.  I’m also sort of upset about my classes — it turns out that I’ve assigned less than half the written work of other people.  I was told I don’t have enough grades for my students, although I was never told exactly how many assignments I was supposed to be giving.

I really feel I’m more confused than other people.  Or am I?  Anyway, I feel humiliated that I’ve been doing things wrong.

I’m hoping these bad feelings will pass.

Bad fashion statements.

October 10th, 2008

I was riding the 25 bus today and a white man got on wearing a fake-looking, shiny Afro wig.  It wasn’t a big Afro — it was pretty short, but yet it looked like it had been pulled onto his head like a bathing cap.  Even more strangely, this guy also had what looked like a fake Hitler mustache.  It wasn’t the tiny square Hitler one, more like the “double-wide” version of it he had sometime.  I could not figure out why anyone would ever wear that, or if it was his real mustache, cut it that way.  And just in time for Yom Kippur!

Great story icon.

I’d almost be tempted to use it on my Facebook page (but not quite).

I got this from chattersmatter.com, which I accidentally stumbled across.

Dog Man anxiety dreams.

October 5th, 2008

For the past few nights I’ve been having these worry dreams where I go to see the Dog Man, and not only does he not run a shop any more, he doesn’t seem particularly interested in talking to me.  Last night I had this version of the dream where I found out he was friends with a different American woman, and that’s why he did not care about being my friend any more.  I was wildly jealous.  Part of the dream happened twice, then.  In one version I found the woman at his house and beat her up.  In the next version, I partly tore up her textbook and wrote, “Don’t steal my friend!  I’m going to kill you!” on it.

Obama is coming to campus tomorrow!

October 2nd, 2008

Obama is coming to the MSU campus tomorrow, and I’m going to do my best to see him.  I’ve gotten out my Konica-Minolta, since it has a good zoom lens, and gotten it charged up and ready to go.  I don’t know if I’ll be able to get into the field where the rally will be, but if not, I’m going to scope out a good vantage point from one of the buildings nearby.  At the very least, I’ll get to listen.

My students were actually really excited about this, even though they said they are not interested in politics and did not want to learn about the election.  I’ve encouraged them to go.

September 25th, 2008

I got up and walked out of one of my classes today — not a class I was teaching, one I was taking.  I just felt so angry and overwhelmed with everything.  It turned out I missed an assignment due date and wouldn’t be able to hand it in — the thing is that it was this weird due date — by noon, the day before the class meeting, in print, in the teacher’s box.  What will doing eight different class preparations every week, plus correcting papers, I don’t have the ability to even notice all this extra stuff.  I’m just too tired.  The level of work with the TAship is just unreasonable.  I COULD do a bad job on my students’ classes, but that would be immoral, since they are paying money to take my class.  I feel like it’s either that or do a bad job on my own classes.  I got so pissed off I am really questioning if this program is any use for me, or if I should just chuck it.  I’m really missing China and the Dog Man.

I called into the department to talk about my confusion and misgivings, and they were just like, “If you’re leaving tell us soon so we can replace you.”
