I was listening to the radio in a taxi today at about 3:30 and heard a report about someone who had been found alive in the rubble in Sichuan. At the point that I heard the news the main problem was that his leg was crushed under incredibly heavy debris, and the rescuers were trying to figure out if they should just amputate it or if they should keep trying to get him out without sacrificing his limb. In the end (and I did not hear this part), they decided that it would be the best to amputate to get him out and to a proper medical care as soon as possible.
I started talking to the taxi driver, speculating that the person was a woman, because in these disasters people who survive in extreme conditions for a long time tend to be female. I remember the incident of the South Korean mall collapse, where a woman was found alive after two weeks. It turns out, though, that the rescued person was a man, Liu De Yun.
