I think my comment on this one hit your famed national firewall and got no further. Let me simplify. Thanks for the Chinese view on this one. We don't hear much of that sort of thing over here. Speaking of China, I just realized that I'll be bummed if you move to Michigan. Posts from China are hopelessly exotic and really very interesting. I've been to E. Lansing. Oh, alright, I was really drunk and it was a long time ago, but I've even lived in Michigan. It was alright, at least at the time.

I live in the SF Bay Area. We have an enormous Chinese population, but the whole discussion of the Olympics seems to be dominated by the Free Tibet group. Thousands of Chinese, waving Chinese flags, turned out to cheer the Olympic torch in SF, but they were denied that pleasure because thousands of mostly Caucasian protesters turned out in opposition.

I don't know enough about the situation in Tibet. It sounds as though the Tibetans are being treated badly. I know that I dislike most of the Caucasians I see campaigning for a Free Tibet. They're just the sort of facile thinking, self righteous types who make up the Christian Right in other parts of the country.

Those people are pretty easy to manipulate. Look at the 'Save Darfur' campaign. Lots of weeping over the plight of Darfur, none of it backed up with researchable documentation. I'm sure there's something very bad happening there, but I won't accept the notion that it's a battle between good and evil. I'm not impressed by the notion that it's genocide by Arabs against Black Africans. I suspect that the whole thing really has everything to do with China's attempts to get a handle on the international oil market.

I do know that the US is backing an Ethiopian invasion of Somalia that is causing as many human rights violations, displacements and killings as anything in Darfur. If this is mentioned in the paper, it usually shows up as a paragraph in the International News section.

I like the links you've posted to Chinese sources, but I wish I knew what was actually going on. Probably nothing that will benefit me in any way.

Just had an interesting discussion with a young friend about media, race and gender. Her interest is in portrayals of Muslim women in Western media, but I'd imagine quite a study could be made of Western portrayals of Asian athletes.
