Abortive trip to Wuxi.

This week is May holiday, and so I decided to take a little trip.  I figured Wuxi would be a good choice, because it’s not so far away, and has some parks and temples and stuff.  But it just didn’t go well.  The only place I could get a room was at what is now called Southern Yangtze University’s foreign experts’ building.  I know the room was cheap, but it was totally disgusting.  The carpet was stained by some unknown fluid, the walls were totally dirty, and the shower was just a pipe coming out of the wall.  The first thing I did was to try to use the toilet, but it hadn’t been flushed since the last guest had used/cut his hair into it, so I tried to flush it.  The flushing thing broke immediately!  Later I tried to open the window, only to find it had been taped shut, and then the screen fell out!

As for Wuxi itself, I’m sure it’s very nice, but on the day I was there, the air was very dirty.  At one point I had a coughing fit, and tears ran out of my eyes because they were so irritated.  I had to sit down, and some old ladies came over and helped me (which was very nice).  Later I had this really bad head/back ache, which I suddenly recognized as what I call the Hong Kong Headache.  Every time I’ve gone there, except the time I had to wear a face mask because of SARS, I’ve gotten a headache at night because of all the dirt in the air.  Even a massage didn’t help me that much, and I felt so sick the next day I decided to go home.  I had to keep my hand over my mouth all the way to the bus station because of the foul air.  I was really nauseous too.  Luckily I got a ticket to go back within an hour.

People I told about this were surprised, because the air quality there is supposedly usually good.  But MAN, it was lousy when I was there.
