Is this as badly written as I think?

Many people cope with failing diets by resigning to be fat.
Can you resign to be fat? You can resign yourself to being fat, but I don’t think you can just resign yourself to be fat. That isn’t normal English, is it?
I also find how adamant they are about the fat thing to be a little weird.
