Here’s a picture of some of the traditional Hakka earth buildings we visited in the countryside of Fujian. They were built by the Hakka minority group after they moved south from their homeland in what is now Henan. They started building them in the late 1400’s (I think), and a lot of them are still standing, and are still inhabited. They are up to four stories high, and have as many as 500 people living inside. They can withstand earthquakes, and because they have thier own wells and food storage areas, can withstand a siege for months. They have beautiful woodwork inside, but unfortunately I lost the pictures I took of that.
