Interesting upcoming film about British royal family.

I just read an article on Stephen Frears’ new film THE QUEEN. According to the movie, Q. Elizabeth was flabbergasted that people were so upset at Diana’s death. That’s interesting to me, not because I’ve ever been a fan of the royals, but I guess because Princess Diana is probably the most famous person I’ve ever seen in real life.

When I was in London, it was the 50th anniversary of VE Day, and there was a huge commemorative event in, maybe, Hyde Park. I was nearing it, and all of a sudden all these cops started yelling “Get away from the road, get away from the road!” So of course I, and everyone else there, went to the road to look. Along came Princess Diana, in a limo with her sons, looking happy. Following them was Prince Charles, alone in a limo, looking unhappy. After his appearance at the event was over, I saw his car almost run over a guy on a motorcycle.

I always felt sorry for her because of the whole infidelity thing, which turned me off to the royal family in general. I felt she was used as a breeding animal. They just wanted, as Churchill’s mom put it, “an heir and a spare,” and then they were done with her. The whole marriage thing sounds like a scam, like they found a girl they thought was young and dumb enough to be tractable, with good genetic material, no scandalous background, and I guess a virgin (I bet they made her take an exam before the engagement, or asked her doctor for information), and then settled the deal. Maybe she thought love was involved, but I can imagine a lot of caculations going on on her husband’s side. And how young was she when she met Charles and became engaged? REALLY young, as I remember. It’s too bad. I know materially, she was rich, but she was still duped and exploited. It must have been horrible for her when she first realized that.

Anyway, here’s the link to the article:
