A United Press International story, from WebIndia123.com:
Cops learn Chinese has many dialects
Bismarck, S.d. | May 26, 2006 12:01:13 AM IST
Four days after responding to a fight in a Chinese restaurant, police in Bismarck, S.D., were still trying to bridge a language barrier Thursday.
Lt. Dan Donlin said two Chinese women apparently were arguing, and when two Chinese men tried to intervene, pushing and shoving began Sunday morning.
None of the four spoke English, so officers put out a call for three interpreters, the Bismarck Tribune reported.
Unfortunately, none of the translators could understand a word the four brawlers were speaking, as Chinese has many dialects.
One of the subjects gave a written statement in Chinese, which no one could understand either, Donlin said.
Frustrated investigators have decided to turn the matter over to the Bismarck city attorney’s office, the newspaper said.
