Sammo Hung at my school’s front gate …
but of course, I didn’t see him!
At 8:00 tonight I ran into my coworker Ed in the Muslim restaurant near my house.¬ He asked if I had just come from class, and when I said yes, he said he had too and asked if I had noticed any famous people near the front gate.¬ Then he showed me a piece of paper with someone’s signature on it.¬ I couldn’t recognize it, and he told me he had bumped into Sammo Hung as he left the school!¬ Ed said he was just standing there on the corner with some foriegn guy.¬ Ed, who is originally from Guangzhou, chatted with him in Cantonese and asked him what he was doing in Shanghai.¬ Hung was noncommittal and didn’t really say why.¬ Ed asked him for an autograph, and said goodbye.
Could I have passed within ten yards of him and not noticed?¬ Probably.¬ This may be another sign that I am doomed never to meet cool Hong Kong celebrities …
Ed was very excited, and his hands were shaking as he ate his soup.¬ A HK celebrity encounter, AND soup!¬ That’s a great night for a¬Cantonese person!¬
