Koji Wakamatsu
I was in my favorite local video store a couple weeks ago, and came across several bizarre-looking black and white films. The cover pictures looked lurid, and I guessed the movies were probably offensive in some way. They were Japanese, and I couldn’t recognize the director’s name, since it was only given in Chinese characters. The DVDs had no English subtitles, but I still decided to buy one whose cover showed a hillside with a couple of dead people and a naked woman hanging on a cross. I noticed on the back cover, there was a guy’s butt, with this thing like a bluish tail growing out of it. The film was named, in English, VIOLENT VIRGIN.
I decided to pop it in the machine at home, and found that, as far as I could tell, it wasn’t that offensive. It had to do with a group of male and female thugs who kidnap an eloping couple, strip them, and torment them. Then the guy of the pair runs away, and falls in with a rich dude hanging out in the grassland drinking martinis with a couple of topless women. That was the first half hour, but I had to turn it off to go to bed or something. I still haven’t finished it.
One of the films I bought tickets for at the HKIFF was CYCLE CHRONICLES: LANDSCAPES THE BOY SAW. It was about this sort of existential/real journey this kid takes by bike after snapping and killing his mom, and the people he meets along the way. Lo and behold, as they introduced the director who was there for a Q & A, I realized it was the same guy! Needless to say, this film was quite different than the one I got. Or maybe it’s too early to say that, since I’ve only watched a little of the other film. Part of the man’s recent film has to do with how Japan’s war atrocities are not discussed at all in public life — actually, that ties in with another film I watched, THE ANTS, and also ties in a bit with the Japanese TV drama I just saw, THE WHITE TOWER. I’ll talk about that a little later, though.
